Rara National Park:

5.1km long, 2.7km wide and 167m deep Rara Lake settles inside Rara National Park. It was declared a Ramsar site in September 2007 ( A Ramsar site is a wetland chosen as international importance for the Convention).

Unlike you might be imagining right now, Rara National Park is in fact the smallest national park of Nepal. The park is under the protection of the Nepalese army and controlled by the Department of Nationals Park and Wildlife Conservation. The Park was established in 1976 to preserve the beauty of the lake and the influence of human activities in it. Now, there is no settlement inside the Rara National Park except for the army camp.

The Park is surrounded by the huge forest with flora such as blue pines, rhododendron, black juniper, browns oaks, and Himalayan Cypress. There are almost 1074 species of flora, 214 species of birds and 51 species of mammals in the park. The endangered species in the park is a red panda, grey wolf, black bear, leopard cat, musk deer, etc. Aslo, Rara National Park is the prime habitat of the red panda.

Jumla and Mugu is the remote district of Nepal with the least population. Thakur group is dominant in the community. The main occupation of people in the place is agriculture, animal husbandry.

Bus to Rara Lake:

Although Rara Lake is the famous tourist destinations of Nepal, flying or hiking is the only way you can get there. The road distance from the Capital to Jumla is 819 km.

You need to fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Talcha Airport in Jumla- 4 km east of the lake. You can book the flight from Nepal Airlines or Tara Airlines. The flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj takes about 1 hour and then to Jumla takes another 20 minutes.

By road, you can only get to Jumla in a jeep or bus (Note: it’s the most dangerous road of Nepal). From Kathmandu to Surket to Kalilot to Ghamghadi its almost 20-22 hours from Kathmandu to Jumla. The road trip is very dangerous.

You can enjoy the trek as you walk through the amazing landscape in the bank of Karnali. Start the trek from Jumla airport which is about 2-3 hours. Further, you can start the trek from Jumla to Chere Chaur and then to Chalachaur. Then you can go to Sinja Valley to Ghorosingha.

For heading back to Jumla, you will have to move from Rara Lake to Pina to Burma and then to Jumla.

OR, you can take a bike from Kathmandu to Kolhapur (500 km, Banke) and then to Manma (250 km). From there to Mugu you need to cross an army check post in Bulbuley. Further, you will move from Rara lake to Nagma (120 km) to Jumla and finally to Surkhet (270 km). From Surkhet, you will drive all the way to Kohalpur (220 km) to Butwal (230 km) and Butwal to Kathmandu.

During summer, the weather of Rara is quite pleasant, but winter comes with so much cold.

The best time to visit is September to October or April to May. But during the Monsoon, June to August, the trail is slippery while the snow blocks the way during winter.
